I have to confess that I love Marni and I love H&M. I love the mix of attainability and trendiness, which might make one think that this kind of collabs are right up my alley. But after much thought and deliberation, I have decided this collaboration isn't for me. Not because of the clothes, to be truthful- design wise this is my favorite designer collaboration to date. All the clothes are unique, seem to be well made, are fashionable and nice and most importantly they don't look like "leftovers" that did not make it to the designer's collection. My reasons for making this decisions are numerous:
- Over- trendiness: After all the fashionistas have gotten their paws on the collection and all bloggers
(except the best one)have been given goody bags, I don't see how I could walk the street wearing an item from the collection without people knowing exactly who I'm wearing, where I bought it and how much I paid. I don't like being a walking billboard, and if I'm doing it anyway I rather have someone pay me rather than paying a hefty sum for what is supposed to be a discounted designer garment. - It's pricey: While items on the collection are not as expensive as the real thing, they are still expensive compared to things that are sold by a high street brand. As the aim of these collections is to make the designer item attainable to the public, the high price tag is in the way of achieving that. Perhaps the folks at H&M wanted this collection to feel more exclusive and "designer-y", but that, in my opinion is not the aim of collaborations of that sort.
- Lines, lines, lines: I am not going to wait in endless lines just for the chance to pay for an overpriced piece of fabric.
- Value for money: As I mentioned, the price is high this time. Actually it's high enough to maybe consider waiting for sales to spend your money on items from the main collection- it would be timeless, well made and fewer people will own the exact same thing as you.
- I'm suffering from Zaraphobia: It's about time I admit it. I'm Leia and I'm a Zaraphobe. That is also partially why I have not worn my Christopher Kane X Topshop dress with the exception of Halloween, when I wanted to dress up as a hungry vagina, as said dress makes my private parts look oh so hungry. Let me share a little anecdote with you that led me to self diagnosing myself as a Zaraphobe. One winter eve circa 2003 I went to a party wearing a Zara skirt, a black sweater and black boots. When I got to the party, the first thing I saw was a girl wearing the exact same Zara skirt with a black sweater and black boots. Of course I complimented the girl on her awesome taste, but this event has left me scarred for life. Clothes that are easily recognizable, boldly colored and are accessible by all are sure to be owned by many people, moreover they are bound to go out of style by next season. Do you want to be dressed like someone else at a party? Do you want to pay a lot of money to be dressed like countless other people?

See? Totally recognizable!
What is your take on designer collaborations? Do you buy them? Do you loath them? Are you a Zaraphobe? I'm starting a support group.
